Jean T. Kroeber
|
|||
| Jean T. Kroeber has been a member of CLWAC since 1982. She served as Vice President for Sculpture from 1988-1992, as President from 1995-1998, and continues as a Permanent Advisor. During her term as President, she guided the Club through the Traveling Exhibition celebrating our Centennial. Starting at the Broome Street Gallery in January of 1996, the Exhibition traveled to ten additional locations, completing its tour in December 1997 and garnering many compliments on the high caliber of our members’ work. The Exhibition provided her with many logistical challenges when venues canceled or changed and arrangements had to be made to find additional venues at the right time in the right part of the country on short notice. Jean dealt with all these problems and more, and made it all seem easy. |

Jean is a native of New York City and a graduate of Harvard-Radcliffe. Her interest in sculpture began in her early school years, when she was introduced to both Greek history and the making of terra cotta sculpture. Later she discovered the pleasure of carving wood and stone, always preferring to work directly by hand in hard varieties of those materials. In addition to early Classical sculpture, she was particularly influenced by the simplified forms of Romanesque carvings and the powerful figures of Maillol and Zorach, leading to study with Jose `de Creeft at the Art Students League. She enjoys the unique challenge of each piece, endeavoring
to bring out the special qualities of a piece of stone or wood, finding
a figure while working with the particular idiosyncrasies of the material
at hand. |

Jean’s gentle and unassuming mien conceals an acute and humorous mind. She is hard-working and thorough, attentive to every detail. In her years of service to this Club, we have learned to treasure her good sense, tact, and articulateness, which have made her a highly effective leader. For these qualities and contributions, as well as for her significant artistic accomplishments, as well are proud to acclaim her as this year’s Honored Member. |
