Lucille Berrill Paulsen
2007 Honored Member

Spontaneity, beauty, wit, charm, talent, gregariousness, warmth, competence, generosity - all these adjectives describe the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club’s immediate past president and long-time board member, Lucille Berrill Paulsen.

Lucille, an accomplished portrait artist using oil and pastels, also uses still life and landscape as subject matter. Her portrait work is done in the classical tradition: She captures her sitters in characteristic poses that show much of their personality. In her work there is life, breathing room, some of the wit often found in a Goya, an emotional resonance, all captured in a moment in time. The portraits of children are especially appealing and infectious. She will often choose a frame with Renaissance qualities that
completes the work giving it a historical yet contemporary interpretation.

Photoraph by Richard Muller.

She holds a degree in advertising design from SUNY and was employed as a commercial artist by McCann-Ericson in Madrid, Spain. She also worked as an assistant art director for Duncan-Brooks in Garden City, NY. She did further study at Parsons School of Design and with Richard Owen as well as workshops with Daniel Greene and Albert Handell. At present, her work is carried by the Mark Humphrey Gallery in Southampton, NY. Over the years she has won many top awards and medals. In addition to CLWAC, she is also a member of the Art League of Long Island and the National Association of Women Artists and is a Fellow of the American Artist Professional League.

It is as an arts advocate that Lucille has contributed so much to artists, especially women artists. As permanent advisor, president, and board member of CLWAC her energy, forward thinking, leadership, and computer skills have served the club well. She designed both the current logo used by the club and the data base of our members and associates. She was instrumental in getting our web page redesigned and functioning. She arranged for a well-received small works exhibit for our members and associates at the Water Mill Museum in 2006; this exhibit promises to become an annual event in different venues.

Other organizations also enjoy her expertise: She is art show coordinator and a board director for the Water Mill Museum and associate membership coordinator for Allied Artists. She was active in the Southampton Artists Association, where she ran their special
exhibitions four times a year for several years. She was a guest artist in the Southampton middle schools, taught portraiture in their Continuing Education Classes and is archived on the Master Artists series of the Peconic Bay Television Network.

She lives with her family in a beautiful homebarn in Water Mill, NY, that she and her husband have built, restored, and landscaped over the years.
