| In my watercolor still life paintings, I draw inspiration from some of the contemporary masters; Dine, DeMuth, O'Keeffe, Rothko, Freckleton, and Beal to name but a few. I have studied Dine's work and noted how he selects an object that has meaning to him, uses it and transforms it into an exciting icon. Also, I am drawn to the richness and luminous color in Rothko's paintings, the use of the diagonal in the exciting compositions of Beal and Freckelton, the delicacy of a DeMuth apple, and the singular focus as found in an O'Keefe flower. In my watercolor still lifes, I choose objects that have a personal connection. I use objects that have passed from generation to generation, objects that possess the potential for significance because of past associations. These objects may be grand or humble, glistening or tarnished, clear or opaque. I also include things associated with life flowers, fruit, eggs, painting solid forms that reflect shifting nuances of color and webs of shadows. Glass, bowls, plates, and patterned fabrics animate the surface breathing energy and vigor into the compositions. I try to design these arrangements so that they are exciting and moving, a visual feast. I want to push the medium so that the color is saturated with richness, depth, and clarity. My goal is to infuse my work with a sense of myth, mystery, magic, and memory. Since retiring as an art teacher and supervisor, I have served on the Board of Directors of the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, as Awards Chairman, Vice President of Painting, and currently as President. In 1997, I chaired the Art League of Long Island's "Long Island Artists Exhibition" at the Heckscher Museum of Art. I have served as an awards juror, guest speaker and panel participant for various art groups in New York City and on Long Island. I received a BS in Art Education from Nazareth College, Rochester, NY; an MA in Liberal Studies at SUNY, Stony Brook; with further study in Art at CUNY, Queens College; LIU, Southampton; Adelphi University; San Miquel, Mexico; and workshops with Daniel Greene, Sondra Freckelton, Jack Beal, and Don Andrews. The Nassau Museum, The Long Island Museum of American Art, History and Carriages, the National Arts Club, the National Academy Museum, the Salmagundi Club, and galleries in New York City, Long Island, Washington DC, Alexandria VA, and Bethesda MD have exhibited my still lifes. The National Association of Women Artists' included my work as part of their permanent collection at the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University. It was also part of the NAWA exhibit at the Cultural Center of the Pan Hellenic Union, in Athens Greece. In this exhibit the advertising banner on the front of the building was of my painting, "Tapestry, Silk, and Old Silver". As part of the US State Department's Artist in Embassies program, I have on display, six paintings in the US Embassy in Papua, New Guinea. I am listed in Who's Who in the East and have been published in New Art International Volume IV and on the web at www.paintingsdirect.com under the name Eleanor Tyndall Meier. |
